Faint heart never won fair lady. -Robin Hood

Say to those who are fearful-hearted,

“Be strong, do not fear!

Behold, your God will come with vengeance,

With the recompense of God;

He will come and save you.”

Isaiah 35:4 NKJV

I love this! I’m really intrigued by the “good outlaw” theme generally that you put forward here too. It reminds me of other characters like Elphaba from Wicked and Eddie Munson from Stranger Things — “being good when goodness is criminalized”

Hey Maddie. This is a great piece! It’s been a long, long time since I’ve read any Robin Hood tales, but I might be due a read. I especially enjoyed your connection to Aquinas, I’ve never read that Summa Q. I recently wrote about Bonhoeffer, and I think he embodies the same ethical contradiction you talk about in this essay.

The contradictions within his nature are one of his great strengths as a character, and an important legacy inherent by the heroic figures who came after him.

I completely agree. He wouldn't be such a powerful figure without them. It also makes for great discussion material with students. Our Robin Hood discussions were some of the most heated. :)
