I too finally read this lovely book this summer via audio book. Since I don’t read summaries of books I hadn’t known the story was told in letters. And also without a physical book hadn’t realized it was a memoir of letters until the end. 😊😄
These letters were wonderful and the relationships formed was beautiful. Thank you for a lovely review!
What a delightful post about this book...which I haven't yet picked up but must do so. My grandmother wrote letters her entire life: to friends, family, her grandchildren. We have a collection of these notes and cards from her, and your post reminded me of how valuable they are to us.
One thing that struck me about this book is how generous and kind they were in exchanging food, gifts, and other thoughtful things with each other. It was so heartwarming to see people treat one another with such care!
This book was so charming! I love all things epistolary! It also was the book that spurred me on to start a letter writing clubs. 70+ people in the USA and beyond are now pen pals because of that! I loved this review!
This was a gem of a find for me last year and your review completely captures the book’s charm. It also helped to paint the landscape of English literature for me by the titles and authors they mentioned in their letters. Isn’t it so cool that we can relate to other literature lovers across (not only) international space but down through time as well?
A personal letter, written or on computer, is often a bridge to friendship. I have experienced this transformation through letter to Marian Hinds in my youth. . Utility gave wat to friendship for Marian and community. Thanks for sharing Maddie., Dennis McCormack
